In 2008, as magazines were shutting their doors faster than beer halls during Prohibition, a proudly independent new title set out to join the dots between cutting-edge scenes around the world – and, in the process, established a devoted global following.
For the loud minority
This beautifully designed magazine conveyed the passion and knowledge of its outernational team. Whether introducing Detroit hip-hop, exploring Cape Town’s house scene or getting in touch with the spiritual music of Guadeloupe, SHOOK took a pioneering approach to music journalism, always alert to the power of culture to create community and transform lives. Issue to issue, we spoke with icons such as soul singer, Chaka Khan, Raewkon from the Wu Tang Clan, reggae legend Max Romeo and “father of Ethio-jazz”, Mulatu Astatke, while shining a light on next-generation talent.
Outside of music, there were interviews with director Barry Jenkins, pre-Moonlight, Booker-winning novelist Paul Beatty and street artist Invader, among others. We travelled to South Africa to uncover the thriving creativity from Soweto to Cape Town and we also ran regular events in amazing venues and built up a global family who helped make each issue unique.
Stocked from Tate Modern to Tower Records Tokyo, Do You Read Me!? Berlin and Fat Beats NYC, SHOOK magazine, over its three-year existence, developed a devoted following among those at the forefront of the music industry.
